Real lives, real stories

Our vision for personal health budgets is to enable people with long term conditions and disabilities to have greater choice, flexibility and control over the health care and support they receive.

A series of films are available from the Department of Health personal health budget pilot programme that ran between 2009 and 2012. They show what the health budgets process is like, what they spend their money on and how they decided on this. The films also include the perspectives of their family, carers and health care professionals. We hope these films illustrate the kind of choices people can make if they have a personal health budget, and the positive impact it can have on their health and lives.

The films can be viewed or downloaded from this site using the links below. Copies of the DVD are available to the NHS and local government (staff who have an .nhs or .gov email address). Visit the DH orderline (opens new window), or call 0300 123 1002 and quote product code PHBDVD1 and PHBDVD2.

You can also view here more recent films which show how people eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare are making personal health budgets work for them.
